Anthony has been a key figure in the evangelization of Christians and for establishing Catholic missions throughout the world. The saint was born in Lisbon Portugal and served as a soldier, farmer, and trader before becoming a Franciscan Friar. Anthony's mission to establish Christian missions is widely famous, but his life is also noted for its asceticism that demonstrated true holiness. One of the most significant qualities about the saint was that he lived out his faith in solitude like quite literally all men should live out their faith by doing so. Anthony's prayer time novena became popular because this practice helped many people to encounter God in a direct way through orthodox Christian prayer practices. Prayer practices and the novena were first documented in 1393. The novena became widespread among Christians after Fatima prayers became popular through the mid-1990s. Anthony was canonized on May 13, 1439 by Pope Eugene IV. He is known as the "Father of Missions" because he sent missionaries to the Kimberley region of Australia in 1519, where they established a community that survived for almost 200 years before being assimilated into the wider culture. His feast day is celebrated on May 13 each year by Catholics, Anglicans, Lutherans and Anglican-Lutherans. Anthony has been venerated throughout the centuries by millions of people for his missionary work. One of the most famous Catholic missions during the 16th century was established by Anthony in 1519 under the guidance of Fray Pedro de Ayala along with his brother Francisco. The missionaries, who were from Portugal, sailed to Australia and established a mission in the Kimberley region of Australia. This mission survived for almost 200 years before being assimilated into the wider culture. This mission is now celebrated as a feast day. At first, the mission was for Portuguese and Spanish sailors and other sea people passing through what is now known as Western Australia; however it eventually became an important link to Europeans for those living further north or south. The Franciscan missionaries who arrived in Australia in the late 18th century became known as the Blackrobes, because of the black robes they wore. They played an important role in educating Aboriginal children to read and write. Anthony also spread Christianity throughout his missions. He was described as a very good preacher, because he used the stories from the Bible to exemplify his points which made them easier for people to understand. Many of his sermons are recorded in ancient texts, but many are lost today. The preachers who were sent by Anthony were often well-educated men or bishops who were sent out with specific tasks to help spread Christianity in different areas of Australia. The missionaries also learned about Aboriginal culture by living among them. They taught the Aboriginal people how to read and write English in order to communicate with Europeans. Anthony is known for his hymns, which are included in many collections of liturgical texts; today, they are used in many other Christian traditions. Many of Anthony's sermons, which he gave to missionaries while working in Australia, were transcribed and widely copied throughout Europe during the 16th century. cfa1e77820
